The High Court on Sunday directed the government to submit within a month to it the report on progress in execution of traffic rules through controlling speed of vehicles to prevent road accidents.
The court also asked the government authorities to submit a report every month on progress in this regard.
The HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Borhan Uddin came up with the order and rule following reports published in The Daily Star on February 5 and the daily Prothom Alo on February 4 containing the news of death of kindergarten student Hamim Sheikh in a city road accident.
In the report, the government has to inform the court what steps it has taken to install ‘speed governor seals’ in the vehicles as per its earlier verdict.
The HC also issued a suo moto rule upon the government to explain within three weeks why it should not be directed to properly execute the traffic rules by controlling speed of the vehicles and examining their licenses.
The home secretary, the inspector general of police, join-commissioner (traffic) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, BRTA chairman, deputy commissioners (traffic) of North, South, East and West zones have to reply to the HC rule.
Earlier in the day, advocate Manzill Murshed, a lawyer of the Supreme Court, placed the issues of The Daily Star of February 5 and the daily Prothom Alo of February 4 before the HC bench.
