Muktagachha twin temples in shambles

The over two centuries old historic twin temples in Muktagachha are in a sorry state -- gradually losing its devotees over the last couple of years. The dilapidated state of the temples, called Sri Sri Anandamoyee Shiva and Kali Mata Mondir, has been caused due to utter negligence of the authorities concerned over the years. Though the Archaeological Department is in charge of preservation, it had not taken a single step in the last 17 years, according to many devotees.

The department has put up signs claiming the temples are under its supervision and urging people not to damage it in any way.

The temples, unique in design, are just outside the mansions of the Muktagachha Zamindars (landlords) and were used for their religious activities. It is oblong in shape with little corridors on a high platform. Steps from the temple connect it to a nearby pond.

The Ministry of Cultural Affairs took charge of the temples as an archaeological site (in 1993) for its proper preservation but nothing has been done yet, said Goutam Kumar Saha, president of temple committee.

The twin temples, most remarkable among the temples in Muktagachha for their artistic design, were commissioned in 1820 by Srimoti Bimola Debi, mother of Maharaja Shashikanta Acharya Chowdhury.

The temples with a large pond in front of them is also known as Dakshineshwar Temple where religious functions including Durga Puja, solemnising of marriages, sacrificial activities, especially on the occasion of Kali and Monosha puja etc are held.

Special puja is held during every full moon and new moon and on the occasion of Pahela Baishakh. Devotees from far and wide gather at the temple on various occasions to seek blessings.

Of late, cracks have developed on the roofs and walls of the temples through which rainwater seeps in, threatening the collapse of the temple at any moment. Weeds have grown on the ceiling and walls, giving them a deserted look. According to sources, through local initiatives some renovation work was done a few years ago which is insufficient to protect the temples from ultimate decay.

Rakesh Chakraborty, temple's purohit, said that the rush of devotees has diminished in recent years, because of the dilapidated condition of the temples. The temples have no income to go for their maintenance, he added.

“We urged the local political leaders and administration several times but none came forward,” said Aboni Kumar Saha, secretary of the temple committee.

Steps for renovation work to protect the temple from further ruination should be taken immediately, as it is a heritage site, said Molina Sen, a retired primary school teacher.
