An outlaw leader was killed in a 'gunfight' between Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and his cohorts in Santhia Upazila of Pabna early Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Rashid, 52, a leader of banned outfit Purba Banglar Communist Party (Lal Pataka). He was accused of several cases including three murder charges.
Rab said, acting on a tip off that a gang of outlaw was holding a secret meeting at Bilshalangi village of the upazila, they conducted a raid and sensing their presence, the gang opened fire on them.
The elite force has to retaliate with fire in a bid to self-defence, Rab claimed.
At one stage, Rashid tried to flee the scene and died on the spot after sustaining bullets, Rab said.
His cohorts, however, managed to flee the scene.
A revolver, one LG gun and 12 bullets were recovered from the spot.
