Mother remanded over Samiul killing

A Dhaka court granted police four days to quiz Ayesha Humaira, mother of Samiul Azim, whose body was found in a sack on Thursday in the city.

A Dhaka court granted police four days to quiz Ayesha Humaira, mother of Samiul Azim, whose body was found in a sack on Thursday in the city.

The court of Metropolitan Magistrate Mustafa Shahriar granted the remand on Friday, when officer-in-charge of Adabar Police Station prayed for seven days to grill the suspected infanticide, said court police's general recording officer sub-inspector Md Jahirul.

The police on Thursday morning recovered the body of six-year old Samiul from the city's Adabar within 200 yards of the victim's residence.

A nursery student, Samiul was the only son of KM Azim and Humaira and stayed at house number 7 at road 8 in Nabodai Housing area.

Adabar Police Station's sub-inspector Sobiruddin Shikder said the body was stuffed head-first in a sack with the legs sticking out. His face was bloodstained.

He told bdnews24.com that Samiul had gone missing on Tuesday afternoon from in front of the house.

His father filed a complaint with the police station.

Although the police suspect that Samiul's death might be connected to his mother's alleged extramarital affair, neither Humaira nor Azim gave any such indications.

Instead, Humaira alleged that they had a row with Shamsuzzaman Arif and his wife Shathi, tenants in the apartment where they had resided earlier.

The couple might be responsible for Samiul's murder, she suspected.

Azim reaffirmed her suspicion by saying that he had lent Tk 1 million to the couple and that he also suspected them.

Adabar police took the parents in for questioning on Thursday afternoon.

Following the interrogation, the police became confident that the murder occurred over the extramarital relation. They are looking for the mother's lover, Arif.

Adabar police station sub-inspector Azharul Islam told bdnews24.com on Thursday evening that the man, whom Humaira had cleverly taken into the house on the night of June 19 claiming that he was a CD-player repairman, was actually Arif.

"Arif and his wife Shathi were neighbours of Azim and his wife Humaira before they shifted to Adabar. The two families were on good terms. Arif even borrowed Tk 1 million from Azim. He, however, did not pay back the amount."

Azharul said Arif and Humaira were having an extramarital relation behind the back of their spouses. However, the relation between the two men was worsening over the debt.

During the questioning Humaira confessed that she and Arif had sex in her bedroom on the night of June 19.

She had sent Arif off to the roof when Azim returned home around 11pm. Azim retired to his room after dinner and Humaira called Arif into her room.

Arif again went to the roof at dawn and returned after Azim left for the day. They went back to Humaira's room after breakfast and continued their tryst through the day.

Humaira also revealed that both she and Arif suspected that her son Samiul might have witnessed the whole incident.

"But I never thought Arif would kill Samiul over this," Humaira told the police.

The building's guard Bablu said Humaira tricked him into admitting Arif into the building around 10pm on June 19.

The guards stopped him, when Arif was leaving the building around 8pm the next day.

At the time, Humaira came out to have the guards let him go.

She claimed that Arif was a CD-player repairman.

Bablu said Humaira sent one of them off to buy eggs on the evening of June 19 and the other guard was sent to look for Samiul's ball in the guards' living quarters.

But the other guard saw Humaira bring in a man, from the living quarters, Bablu said.

He continued to say that Azim returned around 11pm that night and they informed him about Humaira's escapade.

The guards told Azim that Arif was still in his residence.

Housemaid Shahnaz Begum said the relationship between Humaira and Azim was cold.

She said the two slept in separate bedrooms and had not once slept together at night for the three months she has been working for them.

Humaira slept in a separate room along with her son, added Shahnaz.
