Police on Sunday detained 61 people, including senior BNP leader Mirza Abbas and two advisers of opposition leader Khaleda Zia, from the capital during the hartal hours.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Walid Hossain told The Daily Star that a total of 61 people have been arrested from different parts of the capital till 11:00am.
He said Mirza Abbas was detained from in front of his Shahjahanpur residence at about 10:45am and was taken to DB headquarters.
The law enforcers picked up Khaleda Zia’s advisers Ahmed Azam Khan and Abdul Mannan and three others from Karwan Bazar area at about 9:00am while they were trying to bring out a rally in favour of the hartal enforced by opposition BNP. They were taken to Tejgaon Police Station.
Meanwhile, the law enforcers picked up eight JCD leaders and activists from Shahabagh and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Medical University (BMSSU) areas in the morning.
Witnesses said Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal activists blocked Shahabagh intersection and brought out a rally at about 6:30am.
They also ransacked a number of vehicles during the blocked.
The JCD group came under attack by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men at about 7:00am.
Chase and counter-chase took place between them, leaving six JCD leaders and activists injured.
Being chased by police, the JCD activists took shelter at the BSMMU compound.
They locked into a clash with the hospital staffs and vandalised windowpanes of the hospitals and cars, which were parked inside it.
Eight people, including BNP student affairs secretary Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anni, and two staffs of the hospital were injured during the clash.
Eight detained persons arrested from Shahabagh and BSMMU areas were taken to Shahabagh Police Station.
