The Supreme Court has deferred the hearing on a government petition to stay the High Court order that extended the parole of opposition BNP chief Khaleda Zia's younger son Arafat Rahman Coco.
Vacation chamber judge of the Appellate Division Justice A B M Khairul Haque on Monday delayed the hearing to be held at a regular bench on Oct 3. The bench has yet to be designated.
Attorney general Mahbubey Alam argued for the state while Moudud Ahmed stood for Coco.
On Aug 26, the High Court extended Coco's parole by 40 days setting the deadline on Oct 10.
However, the court ordered Coco to report at Bangladesh High Commission in Thailand every three days, failing which his parole will be cancelled.
Coco was arrested on Sep 2, 2007 in GATCO graft case. Later in May 2008 he was granted parole for medical treatment abroad. The parole was regularly extended through appeals.
His last parole deadline was Aug 14, 2010. However, the home ministry rejected his last appeal for extension and ordered him on Aug 19 to return home by Aug 31.
