Main opposition BNP has called a half-day strike at Ward-70 of Dhaka City Corporation on Thursday protesting the killing of Haji Ahammad Hossain, the councillor of the ward.
Ward-70 is in the old part of the city.
BNP Tuesday midnight took the decision to enforce the strike along with some other programmes, according to party sources.
Two criminals Tuesday night shot and killed councillor Ahamad as he was leaving Alubazar Masjid on Hajji Osman Gani Road at Bangshal in the capital.
This will be the first such programme of BNP as opposition after the Awami League-led grand alliance assumed power in January 2009 following a landslide victory in the December 29 parliamentary elections.
The party will also hold demonstration at the city’s Muktangon Saturday afternoon in protest of the killing of Ahammad.
Ahammad, also the Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal Dhaka city south unit president, reportedly succumbed to his bullet injuries at the city’s Square Hospital at 10:00pm.
He came under gun attack at the old part of the city earlier in the evening.
Jubo Dal will stage demonstration in the afternoon in front of Nayapaltan BNP central office protesting the killing.
BNP will hold a doa mahfil at its central office Friday afternoon seeking divine blessings for peace of the departed soul of Haji Ahammad Hossain.
