Detective Branch police have detained a friend of Abdul Hamid Paban, son of BNP secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain, for questioning in connection with the recent blasts in front of the BNP chairperson's Gulshan office, officials said Saturday.
A Detective Branch official told bdnews24.com that after grilling Paban's friend Golam Sabbir Shovon they also impounded a red car suspected to have been used in the bomb attack last week.
"A DB team picked Shovon up from in front of Bashundhara City," detective inspector Abul Kalam Azad said.
"After questioning him, the team seized a red Toyota Rush from his residence at Kalabagan. It is thought to be the same vehicle from which one or more bombs were thrown on that day."
Azad said Shovon was picked up in the first place "on suspicion", but could not give further details.
Kalabagan police sub inspector Atiqur Rahman also told bdnews24.com the DMP's Detective Branch recovered a red car from Shovon's residence at Lake Circus in Kalabagan on Saturday night.
Another car reportedly belonging to Paban was also seized from Shovon's residence, Rahman said.
Two bombs exploded on Feb 23 on the road in front of the political office of BNP chief and opposition leader Khaleda Zia.
The handmade bombs, popularly called 'cocktails', were reportedly thrown from a car and a motorbike, witnesses said at the time.
Deputy police commissioner of Gulshan zone Nurul Alam told bdnews24.com on the day that no one had been hurt in the attack.
However, the opposition party claimed at least one person was hurt in the explosions, including Paban.
On Feb 15, police had recovered two suspect packages, also thought to be unexploded 'cocktails', in front of Khaleda's office.
